Magyk By Angie Sage
Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 28, 2016

This is the first book in the seven book Septimus Heap series. First let me say that I love this series.  There are so many great characters that anyone should find one that they identify with.  The author has a great ability to give each character a distinct voice and backstory.  She is able to keep many points of view and individual story lines going simultaneously without the story feeling strained.  The author takes a new approach to magic in this series making it almost scientific.  Magic must first be discovered before it can be used.  The story takes place in a time where magic is still part of daily life but so much of its secrets have been lost.  The bad guys are ruthless and pursue our heroes through many different settings making the story exciting and fast paced.  There is some killing and violence but it is not detailed.  The story progresses well leaving enough clues for you to have some insight into the climax however there is still an exciting reveal at the end.  Ms Sage must have a vivid imagination because she paints a storyline that is so rich in detail that you feel like you’re…

The Name of this Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch
Action and Adventure , Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is the first book in the Secret series I really like the way way he writes these books because he is talking to you but wants to keep story details secret.  The main characters are Cass and Max-Ernest, two kids who struggle to make friends, who get thrown into an adventure they know nothing about.  When someone from their school gets kidnapped they have to follow the clues to a mysterious spa where they find out about a secret society.  They have to rescue the their school mate and figure out what the society is up to.  The book is a medium pace that ends off in a really exciting spot.  There are some parts that talk about making mummies, kinda gross, but not too much.  There is no boy/ girl stuff.  This book makes a mystery that spands the past, present and future. If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late by Pseudonymous Bosch
Action and Adventure , Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is the second book in the Secret series. The book is written in the same fun style where the author is talking to you.  The book starts by giving you some insight into what the bad guys are doing.  Then it resumes with Cass and Max Ernest.  They find a magical object that draws them deeper into the mysterious society.  Once again they are following clues, this time to find the source of evil.   They are only beginning to discover how they are linked to this ancient group.  I liked this one as much as I liked the first book.  I like how the kids have to use problem solving skills to figure out what the clues mean and follow them to the answer. The kids sneak out, which is not good but mostly they are good role models.  I will  get back to you soon with my review of the next book. AR Points 9.0 Lexile Level 760

Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon by Lisa Papademetriou
Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is one of my favorite Disney Faires books. I like all of these books because they do job helping you understand how the characters feel.  You can also pick up any book in the series and it makes sense without reading the others.  Rani is a main character in all three of the Disney Faires illustrated novels but this is the first one of the smaller books I’ve read that is about her.  I really like Rani a lot because she is adventurous and kind.  Rani leaves Fairy Haven on her own because she is struggling with her water talent.  She ends up finding the mermaid lagoon and making new friends that help her understand where she belongs.  This story has a lot of twists and turns and I really like the ending. The Night Fairy by Laura Amy Schlitz
Fantasy , Fiction / June 26, 2016

This book is about a little night fairy who has to learn how to take care of herself.  I like the way the author describes the fairy and the animals she meets.  The story is exciting and really fun.  The fairy has magic but she has to discover how it use it along the way.  One thing that is very different about this story is that fairies live on there own and we  Some parts are funny and others are a bit sad.  The only thing I really didn’t like about the book was how it ends.  I was expecting the story to go on and then its just over. The Palace of Glass by Django Wexler
Action and Adventure , Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is the third and last book of the The Forbidden Library series This book picks up where the last book leaves off with Alice angry and seeking revenge.  I didn’t like that revenge was the driving force however the author is clever in slowly redirecting her anger.  Eventually Alice discovers that getting revenge doesn’t make you feel any better.  The themes of friendship and teamwork continue in this book.  The whole book builds to a climactic end and is really a journey about learning to leave anger behind and focus on the people are in your life.  The author doesn’t talk about feelings and stuff, they just let your see Alice’s path through the action.  There are lots of good action and the story was really smartly written. I like the ending a lot and even though the second book was not the best the series all together was excellent. Lexie Level 780 AR points 10 Percy age 9

The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler
Action and Adventure , Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is the first book of the three book Forbidden Library series If you’ve ever felt like a good book transports you into the story then this is a book for you. The book is about a girl named Alice who is a normal girl who overhears a conversation that changes her life.  After the tragic loss of her father (which she struggles with emotionally in the story) she is sent to live with an uncle she doesn’t know.  She discovers that he has a magical library and despite the fact that she doesn’t believe in magic she is forced to change her mind.   I really like how magic and books are intertwined in the story.  Even though the story follows a girl its not a girly book.  The story is medium paced with spots that are pretty exciting, an overall fast read.  The author uses simple language but very well.  Even though this book is part of a series it could be read on its own, it is the best written of the three however the other two books are definitely worth reading.   There are similarities to the premise of this story and the book Ink Heart…

The Mad Apprentice by Django Wexler
Action and Adventure , Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 26, 2016

This is the second book in the Forbidden Library series This book is much stranger than the first book.  The library apprentice is driven mad  and becomes the bad guy of book. Alice and her friends are forced to fight the monsters from every book in order to stop an evil plot. I didn’t like that the author chose to make the apprentice the brother of Alice’s friend.  This makes the story have a sad, uneasy undertone.  Other characters in the book are killed while fighting multiple enemies which also makes this book the down arc of the series story line.  I did like the theme of friendship and learning to work together as a team, which makes the losses even harder.  The book starts starts off slow but speeds up through the middle and then slows to the end which happens abruptly leaving you ready for the third book.  If you read this book you have to read the third book so that you are not left with a sad, ugh, feeling.  It will be worth it in the end. The Enchanted Palace by Rosie Banks
Fantasy , Fiction , Series / June 22, 2016

The first book in the Secret Kingdom series This book has a lot of things in it that I like such as fairies and unicorns. The girls are normal kids who discover fairies. This is the first book of the series where the girls get to know the fairies.  The fairies in this book are different than in some of the other series that I have read because they don’t have wings and use much less magic.  They are more like regular people who are just very tiny.  Even the unicorns are different than in any story I have read before.  In this first book we discover that an evil queen has hidden 6 thunderbolts throughout the fairy kingdom that cause bad things to happen.  I think that each book will have the girls and fairies working together exploring different parts of the kingdom to find the thunderbolts.  I really like how this book sets up the story for the rest of the series.  I also like that the girls were like me and my friends and I could imagine us going on the adventure. The Fire Within by Chris D’lacey
Fantasy , Series / June 7, 2016

This is the first book in the Last Dragon Chronicles. This book is about a lodger named David who finds himself living in a family’s house who have a mysterious secret. Elizabeth and her daughter, Lucy can create clay dragons that come to life!  The Pennykettle’s give David his own special dragon, Gadzooks, as a gift.  The book is mostly about David’s life with the Pennykettles.   Lucy loves squirrels and so David starts writing her a story about squirrels.  As he writes the story he gets inspirational notes from his dragon.  David starts realizing that as he writes parts of his story actually come true.  (The story David writes is a funny side story in this book.)  David tried to understand how the dragons come to life and why his story seems to be real.  Is this part of the dragon’s magic or is it coming from David?  This first book in the series is more of a light funny read.  The series builds in action and excitement but this first one is just a lead in.  I enjoyed this book although it was not at all what I expected it to be.  I thought the idea  of making clay statues…
